This project aims is to develop a set of software tools (i.e. OPERA Technology) for managing and delivering multimedia contents to Internet end-users. Basically, OPERA system will present a single link for a media object, irrespective of bit-rate and coding format. Through the OPERA platform, the system will select the media version that best fits the user's connection and browser configuration for delivering.

With the OPERA enabled web system, every user will see the same web page and the same links. The user no longer needs to know the connection bandwidth, nor what kind of playback software to use (as long as they are installed). That means that clicking the same link, users connected via modem will receive a low-bit-rate version of a video, while broadband Internet user will receive a high-quality version of the same video. Everything is performed automatically and transparently by OPERA. Thus, OPERA enhances the current audio and video streaming systems and allows them to work more transparently and to complement each others.

In fact, the current Internet delivery technologies are rather primitive, with little intelligence at either end. OPERA is one effort to add more intelligence to the delivery model to make it easier for both the user and the service providers.
